Dowds was appointed as the MEP Design and Build contractor of the new Marjory Kinnon Special Education Needs School, for London’s Hounslow Borough Council, with lead contractor Farrans.
The £30m new build 2-storey education project, now provides over 9,500m2 of teaching space to cater for 288 pupils, and features an array of therapy and physical activity spaces, geared towards quality learning, in a safe, flexible environment – it is also now one of the country’s largest SEN schools.
Key features within the school: Early Years pupils have their own specially designed play space. The Primary area includes a sensory garden, a cycle track, a football pitch and an active area with swings, a climbing frame and sunken trampolines. The Secondary outside space has a more mature feel with outdoor gym equipment and pop-up table tennis, a 4G football pitch, a reflection garden for quieter lunchtimes and an Eco Garden to promote an interest in horticulture. The former school has been demolished, and the site has been developed into a grass playing field incorporating full-size football pitches. These are seen as a wider community resource with supervised and controlled access by local clubs.
As this was a BIM Level 2 project, we engaged our in-house BIM department from a very early stage to feed into the design process, ensuring buildability and providing practical knowledge, where necessary, throughout the design stage.
This project was successfully delivered within a “live” school campus whilst the original school remained fully operational during construction.
