Dowds have been commissioned to carry out M&E works at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. Originally built in the early 2000s, it is a PFI building, and Meridian Hospital Company systems are now not fit for purpose, as well as non-compliant with current regulations.
This £20m MEP infrastructure upgrade project scope includes the following major infrastructure replacement to bring the hospital building fully compliant in terms of HBN/ HTMs (including June 2021 revision) as well as industry good practice.
Key scope of works included a new UKPN second power supply including new HV distribution, full re-configuration of the existing energy centre with new plant provision including generators, a new LV electrical distribution up to the local distribution boards, new VIE installation and modification with medical gas provision including upgrade to bed heads, installing 9 brand new AHUs, refurbishing 21 AHUs and ductwork to critical areas such as theatres, pathology, Special Baby Care Unit and delivery suite, a site wide busbar infrastructure, associated upgrade works to regulations for Fire Alarm, BMS, Nurse Call, Data and Bedhead trunking as well as small power, LTHW, Domestic services.
The key challenge for the scheme was operating across a fully live hospital site, ensuring minimal disruption is incurred by trust and patients alike.
Management of shut downs, temporary services, stakeholder engagement along with a regimented commissioning strategy to enable systems to be brought offline and re-introduced across the 80 week program will be fundamental part in the success of the project.
